Long gone are the days of butchers slaughtering animals on the village place with little care for animal welfare or food safety practices… Still, slaughterhouses in France are suffering from a lot of bad press recently, following two recent scandals uncovering instances of animal cruelty.
While these are unacceptable practices whose perpetrators should be brought to justice, we should not amalgamate all slaughterhouses and label them as animal torture chambers. Slaughterhouses operators and meat inspectors are key players in a well-regulated food-producing industry.
